Smart Little Gadget
| di 10.37
For active people, especially those who are always on the go and are technology savvy, this portable multimedia gizmo is the thing. This small, digital-camera-look- alike is actually a mobile multimedia storer, viewer, and player. Yet, it is simply called Portable Video Player (PVP). A PVP allows us to record TV programs (including from cable or satellite) and watch them later; we can listen to songs using its MP3 feature, and we can download and store data and photos from a PC or camera for later viewing. Sounds good?

everal Brands from Epson, cowon, to the hot-selling Archos, offer this multifunction gadget. With up to 100 gigabytes storage capacity and a big LCD that shows pictures in high resolution this thingy is soon to replace iPod. Furthermore some types are IE and MAC compatible. In fact one brand is also known for its plug and play characteristics.
For photographers or those who love taking a shot or have too many photos stored in their digital cameras the gadget offers a photo storage feature that can store up to I million JPEG photos. Sometime saving your photo collection in a computer can be risky, so you need to have backup. This multimedia device allows you to carry photos with you wherever you want to go. Thus, it will be handy thing to show your shots around or to print them any time you want.
Do you often miss your favorite show on TV and cable or satellite? No sweat! You can easily set the timer on this tool and it will automatically record the show for you. All you have to do is make use of its TV docking pod (hub connection) and enjoy the show some other time. a newer version of PVP even has and infrared sensor so that a docking pod is no longer needed. Those of you who always travel around can make your long journeys less boring by watching your favorite movies or videos downloaded earlier during the trip. This cool little contrivance can download a maximum of 55,000 songs and 400 hours of video (40-250 full-length movies). Its battery life can last for 5 hours if you watch a movie. Need to show your portfolio or resume on the spot? This multimedia gizmo can store them for you.
Wow! There’s a lot we can do such a small object but there are a few things that you have to be aware of. First of all, it’s quite expensive. Then, pirated stuff should be reconsidered. Why? Because with some PVP’s, even thought you can record from copy-protected DVD, and play the video back on the PVP’s LCD, you cant play the files on an external TV or your pc . And in some PVP’s, you cannot watch slide shows with music playing.

Body Image and self esteem
Are you happy about your physical conditions? Or do you think that you are skinny, too fat, too short, or thin? Or maybe you have this mule or scar you really want to get rid of. Whatever you think, you should know that body image is based on your thoughts and feelings about the way your body looks. Poor body image comes from negative thoughts and feelings about your appearance. Body image is a major factor in self-esteem, which is the way you think and feel about yourself as a person. Self-esteem can also be based on how you think other people look at you as a person. Whenever you feel low, try to remember these:
- Your body is your own, no matter what shape, size, or color it comes in. Other people may say whatever they want, but they’re not the master of your body.
- You’re unique because you’re not just a copy of someone else.
- What’s inside your brain and mind is more important than your looks.
- Try to focus on improving your behavior and skill. Giving enough time to nourish your talents will help you to improve your unique qualities.
Nice to Know:
- Treating yourself with respect and realizing that every part of you is worth caring for and protecting will help you keep a healthy attitude towards yourself.
- Building a good self-esteem can take a long time and is not always easy, but knowing that you can improve your self-esteem is the firs step.
Peer Pressure
Sometimes, the problems in your life can actually come from your peers. They may pressure you into doing something you’re uncomfortable with, such as smoking, shoplifting, doing drugs or drinking, or taking dangerous risk when driving a car. This pressure may be expressed openly or indirectly. Sometimes a group can make subtle signals without saying anything at all letting you know that you must dress or talk a certain way or adopt particular attitudes toward school, other students, parents, and teachers in order to win acceptance and approval. There’s no magic to standing up to peer pressure; it does take courage to deal with it.
Here are some tips:
- Listen to your gut. If you feel uncomfortable, it means that something about the situation is wrong and absolutely not for you.
- Plan for possible pressure situations. Learn a few tricks to act or do certain things you want to avoid. If you’re holding a bottle of water or a can of soda at a party, for instance, you’re les likely to be offered a drink you don’t want.
- Learn to feel comfortable saying no. Although it’s difficult to say no you should practice to do it when necessary.
- Hang with people who feel the same way you do. Choose friends who will speak up with you when you’re in need of moral support, and be quick to speak up for a friend in the same way.
- Blame your parents. You can say, “Are you kidding? If my mom found out, she’d kill me, and her spies are everywhere.” Using your parents for a shield sometimes is helpful. Only don’t do it too often, or you will be labeled as a cry baby.
- If a situation seems dangerous, don’t hesitate to get an adult’s help.
Nice to know:
· It’s not always easy to resist negative peer pressure, but when you do, it is easy to feel good about it afterwards.
· Consider yourself a leader, and know that you have the potential to make a difference.
Tips for safer Instant Messaging
| di 10.27
Instant Messaging (commonly referred to as IM) is an online communication method similar to e-mail, except that it is generally faster. Using an IM program such as Windows Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, or Yahoo Messenger, you can send a message which will be received almost immediately by the person you sent it to. When your friend types a response, you see that right away.
Use IM more Safely
Communicating by using an IM program has some of the same security and privacy risks as communicating by e-mail, but there are a few additional dangers that you should be aware of. Take a look at the following tips for safer IM.
1. Be careful when creating a screen name. Each IM program asks you to create a screen name, which is similar to an e-mail address. You screen name should not provide or allude to personal information. For example, use a nickname such as SoccerFan instead of JakartaFenny.
2. Create a barrier against unwanted instant messaging. Do not list your screen name or e-mail address in public areas (such as large Internet directories or online community profiles) or give them to strangers. Some IM services link your screen name to your e-mail address when you register. The easy availability of your e-mail address can result in your receiving an increased number of spam attacks.
3. Never provide sensitive personal information, such as your credit card number or password in an IM conversation.
4. Only communicate with people who are on your contact or buddy list.
5. If you decide to meet a stranger that you know only from IM communication, take appropriate safety precautions. For example, do not meet that person alone, (take a friend or parent with you), and always meet and stay in a public place, such as a café.
6. Never open pictures, download files, or click links in messages from people you don’t know. If they come from someone you don’t know, confirm with the sender that the messages (and their attachments) are trustworthy. If they are not, close them.
7. Don’t send personal or private instant messages at work. Your employer might have a right to view those messages.
8. If you use a public computer, do not select the feature that allows you to log on automatically. People who use that computer after you may be also to see and use your screen name to log on
With all these precautions, hopefully your instant messaging activity will be a smooth and safe experience.

Snake in the Bath
How would you like to find a snake in you bath?
We had just moved into a new house, which had been empty for so long thet everything was in a terrible mess. Anna and I decided we would clean the bath first, so we set to, and turned on the tap.
Suddenly to my horror, a snake's head appeared in the plug hole. Then out slithered the rest of his long thin body. He twisted and turned on the slippery bottom of the bath, spitting and hissing at us
For an instant I stood there quite paralyzed. Then I yelled for my husband, who luckily came running and killed the snake with the handle of a broom. Anna, who was only three at the time, was quite interested in the whole business. Indeed I had to pull her out of the way or she'd probably have leant over the bath to get a better look.
We found out later that it was a black mamba, a poisonous kind of snake. It had obviously been fast asleep, curled up at the bottom of the nice warm water-pipe. It must have had an awful shock when the cold water came trickling down! But nothing to the shock I got! Ever since then I've always put the plug in firmly before running the bath water.

The Toba eruption was the latest of a series of at least three caldera-forming eruptions which have occurred at the volcano. Earlier calderas were formed around 700,000 and 840,000 years ago.[2]
To give an idea of its magnitude, consider that although the eruption took place in Indonesia, it deposited an ash layer approximately 15 cm (6 in) thick over the entire Indian subcontinent; at one site in central India, the Toba ash layer today is up to 6 m (20 feet) thick[3] and parts of Malaysia were covered with 9 m of ashfall.[4] In addition it has been calculated that 1010 metric tons of sulphuric acid was ejected into the atmosphere by the event, causing acid rain fallout.[5]

The subsequent collapse formed a caldera that, after filling with water, created Lake Toba. The island in the center of the lake is formed by a resurgent dome.
Though the year can never be precisely determined, the season can: only the summer monsoon could have deposited Toba ashfall in the South China Sea, implying that the eruption took place sometime during the northern summer.[6] The eruption lasted perhaps two weeks, but the ensuing "volcanic winter" resulted in a decrease in average global temperatures by 3 to 3.5 degrees Celsius for several years. Greenland ice cores record a pulse of starkly reduced levels of organic carbon sequestration. Very few plants or animals in southeast Asia would have survived, and it is possible that the eruption caused a planet-wide die-off. There is some evidence, based on mitochondrial DNA, that the human race may have passed through a genetic bottleneck within this timeframe, reducing genetic diversity below what would be expected from the age of the species. According to the Toba catastrophe theory proposed by Stanley H. Ambrose of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1998, human populations may have been reduced to only a few tens of thousands of individuals by the Toba eruption.
