Going Mental???

Life is not about having no problems, but rather about being able to resolve them quickly when they occur. (Grant Brecht)

E

Too much homework, problems with parents or pressure to keep up with friends is some of the problems that they have to face on a daily basis. At the same time, adolescence also experience some changes in their bodies, or/and minds. In other words, youngsters have to deal with external problems which sometimes drive them nuts.

If you think that sometimes you don’t understands your own feelings, don’t know what you want, and worry too much about what will happen next, you’re not alone. You’re at this stage called unstable period the time for searching and building your identity, the real you. Knowing about some problems that may occur along the way will help you to get through this bumpy chapter of your life.

Stress

Sleeping problems unexplainable sadness panic attacks sudden anger and/or moodiness are signs of stress. When you already have one or two of those symptoms you should be aware that you need to do something.
The most helpful method of dealing with stress is learning how to manage the stress that comes along with any new challenge good or bad. Knowing how to de-stress and doing it when things are relatively calm can help you get through challenging circumstances that my arise. Here are some things that can help keep stress under control.
• Take a stand against over-scheduling. You know your limitations; just do the things that receive priority and cut out the unnecessary ones.
• Be realistic. Don’t try to be perfect - no one is.
• Get a good night’s sleep. Getting enough sleep helps keep your body and mind in top shape, making you better equipped to deal with any negative stressors.
• Learn to relax. Reading a good book, making time for a hobby, or spending time with your pet can put you at ease and reduce stress.
• Treat your body well. Getting regular exercise help your body get the right fuel to function at its best. Under stressful conditions, the body needs vitamins and minerals more than ever.
• Watch what you’re thinking. A healthy dose of optimism can help you make the best of stressful circumstances.
• Solve the little problem. Learning to solve everyday problems can give you a sense of control. But avoiding them can leave you feeling like you have little control and that just adds to stress.

Nice To Know:
• Having a little stress can help keep you on your toes, ready to rise to a challenge.
• Stress-management skills work best when they’re applied regularly, not just when the pressure’s on.

Body Image and self esteem

Are you happy about your physical conditions? Or do you think that you are skinny, too fat, too short, or thin? Or maybe you have this mule or scar you really want to get rid of. Whatever you think, you should know that body image is based on your thoughts and feelings about the way your body looks. Poor body image comes from negative thoughts and feelings about your appearance. Body image is a major factor in self-esteem, which is the way you think and feel about yourself as a person. Self-esteem can also be based on how you think other people look at you as a person. Whenever you feel low, try to remember these:

  • Your body is your own, no matter what shape, size, or color it comes in. Other people may say whatever they want, but they’re not the master of your body.
  • You’re unique because you’re not just a copy of someone else.
  • What’s inside your brain and mind is more important than your looks.
  • Try to focus on improving your behavior and skill. Giving enough time to nourish your talents will help you to improve your unique qualities.

Nice to Know:

  • Treating yourself with respect and realizing that every part of you is worth caring for and protecting will help you keep a healthy attitude towards yourself.
  • Building a good self-esteem can take a long time and is not always easy, but knowing that you can improve your self-esteem is the firs step.

Peer Pressure

Sometimes, the problems in your life can actually come from your peers. They may pressure you into doing something you’re uncomfortable with, such as smoking, shoplifting, doing drugs or drinking, or taking dangerous risk when driving a car. This pressure may be expressed openly or indirectly. Sometimes a group can make subtle signals without saying anything at all letting you know that you must dress or talk a certain way or adopt particular attitudes toward school, other students, parents, and teachers in order to win acceptance and approval. There’s no magic to standing up to peer pressure; it does take courage to deal with it.

Here are some tips:

  • Listen to your gut. If you feel uncomfortable, it means that something about the situation is wrong and absolutely not for you.
  • Plan for possible pressure situations. Learn a few tricks to act or do certain things you want to avoid. If you’re holding a bottle of water or a can of soda at a party, for instance, you’re les likely to be offered a drink you don’t want.
  • Learn to feel comfortable saying no. Although it’s difficult to say no you should practice to do it when necessary.
  • Hang with people who feel the same way you do. Choose friends who will speak up with you when you’re in need of moral support, and be quick to speak up for a friend in the same way.
  • Blame your parents. You can say, “Are you kidding? If my mom found out, she’d kill me, and her spies are everywhere.” Using your parents for a shield sometimes is helpful. Only don’t do it too often, or you will be labeled as a cry baby.
  • If a situation seems dangerous, don’t hesitate to get an adult’s help.

Nice to know:

· It’s not always easy to resist negative peer pressure, but when you do, it is easy to feel good about it afterwards.

· Consider yourself a leader, and know that you have the potential to make a difference.

Tips for safer Instant Messaging

Instant Messaging (commonly referred to as IM) is an online communication method similar to e-mail, except that it is generally faster. Using an IM program such as Windows Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, or Yahoo Messenger, you can send a message which will be received almost immediately by the person you sent it to. When your friend types a response, you see that right away.

Use IM more Safely
Communicating by using an IM program has some of the same security and privacy risks as communicating by e-mail, but there are a few additional dangers that you should be aware of. Take a look at the following tips for safer IM.
1. Be careful when creating a screen name. Each IM program asks you to create a screen name, which is similar to an e-mail address. You screen name should not provide or allude to personal information. For example, use a nickname such as SoccerFan instead of JakartaFenny.
2. Create a barrier against unwanted instant messaging. Do not list your screen name or e-mail address in public areas (such as large Internet directories or online community profiles) or give them to strangers. Some IM services link your screen name to your e-mail address when you register. The easy availability of your e-mail address can result in your receiving an increased number of spam attacks.
3. Never provide sensitive personal information, such as your credit card number or password in an IM conversation.
4. Only communicate with people who are on your contact or buddy list.
5. If you decide to meet a stranger that you know only from IM communication, take appropriate safety precautions. For example, do not meet that person alone, (take a friend or parent with you), and always meet and stay in a public place, such as a café.
6. Never open pictures, download files, or click links in messages from people you don’t know. If they come from someone you don’t know, confirm with the sender that the messages (and their attachments) are trustworthy. If they are not, close them.
7. Don’t send personal or private instant messages at work. Your employer might have a right to view those messages.
8. If you use a public computer, do not select the feature that allows you to log on automatically. People who use that computer after you may be also to see and use your screen name to log on

With all these precautions, hopefully your instant messaging activity will be a smooth and safe experience.

Snake in the Bath

How would you like to find a snake in you bath?

We had just moved into a new house, which had been empty for so long thet everything was in a terrible mess. Anna and I decided we would clean the bath first, so we set to, and turned on the tap.

Suddenly to my horror, a snake's head appeared in the plug hole. Then out slithered the rest of his long thin body. He twisted and turned on the slippery bottom of the bath, spitting and hissing at us

For an instant I stood there quite paralyzed. Then I yelled for my husband, who luckily came running and killed the snake with the handle of a broom. Anna, who was only three at the time, was quite interested in the whole business. Indeed I had to pull her out of the way or she'd probably have leant over the bath to get a better look.

We found out later that it was a black mamba, a poisonous kind of snake. It had obviously been fast asleep, curled up at the bottom of the nice warm water-pipe. It must have had an awful shock when the cold water came trickling down! But nothing to the shock I got! Ever since then I've always put the plug in firmly before running the bath water.

Lake Toba

Lake Toba is a lake, 100 km long and 30 km wide, and 505 m. (1,666 ft.) at its deepest point, in the middle of the northern part of the Indonesian island of Sumatra with a surface elevation of about 900 m (3,000 feet), stretching from 2.88° N 98.52° E to 2.35° N 99.1° E. It is the largest volcanic lake in the world.

The Toba eruption (the Toba event) occurred at what is now Lake Toba about 67,500 to 75,500 years ago. It had an estimated Volcanic Explosivity Index of 8 (described as "mega-colossal"), making it possibly the largest explosive volcanic eruption within the last twenty-five million years. Bill Rose and Craig Chesner of Michigan Technological University deduced that the total amount of erupted material was about 2800 cubic km (670 cubic miles) — around 2,000 km³ of ignimbrite that flowed over the ground and around 800 km³ that fell as ash, with the wind blowing most of it to the west. By contrast, the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens ejected around 1.2 cubic km of material, whilst the largest volcanic eruption in historic times, at Mount Tambora in 1815, emitted the equivalent of around 100 cubic kilometres of dense rock and created the "Year Without a Summer" as far away as North America.
The Toba eruption was the latest of a series of at least three
caldera-forming eruptions which have occurred at the volcano. Earlier calderas were formed around 700,000 and 840,000 years ago.[2]
To give an idea of its magnitude, consider that although the eruption took place in Indonesia, it deposited an ash layer approximately 15 cm (6 in) thick over the entire Indian subcontinent; at one site in central India, the Toba ash layer today is up to 6 m (20 feet) thick[3] and parts of Malaysia were covered with 9 m of ashfall.[4] In addition it has been calculated that 1010 metric tons of sulphuric acid was ejected into the atmosphere by the event, causing acid rain fallout.[5]

Landsat photo of Sumatra surrounding Lake Toba
The subsequent collapse formed a
caldera that, after filling with water, created Lake Toba. The island in the center of the lake is formed by a resurgent dome.
Though the year can never be precisely determined, the season can: only the
summer monsoon could have deposited Toba ashfall in the South China Sea, implying that the eruption took place sometime during the northern summer.[6] The eruption lasted perhaps two weeks, but the ensuing "volcanic winter" resulted in a decrease in average global temperatures by 3 to 3.5 degrees Celsius for several years. Greenland ice cores record a pulse of starkly reduced levels of organic carbon sequestration. Very few plants or animals in southeast Asia would have survived, and it is possible that the eruption caused a planet-wide die-off. There is some evidence, based on mitochondrial DNA, that the human race may have passed through a genetic bottleneck within this timeframe, reducing genetic diversity below what would be expected from the age of the species. According to the Toba catastrophe theory proposed by Stanley H. Ambrose of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1998, human populations may have been reduced to only a few tens of thousands of individuals by the Toba eruption.

How to Make Stickers

What you’ll need: little squirt bottles of fabric paint and a mirror or glass to work on.

Follow the four easy steps below.

1. Take the paint and make a design or drawing on the glass, like a name, flower, heart, or star.
2. Let the paint dry for 24 hours or until it isn’t soft to touch or press down. The more paint you use, the longer it will have to dry.
3. After it is dry, peel back the paint and the design will come cleanly off the glass. Make sure to take your time so as not to rip the design in pieces. The paint will feel just like thin rubber and is very easy to tear.
4. Rub a little bit of water on the back of the sticker so it will be able to adhere to another surface. Place it anywhere on the mirror or any other surface.

The rubber-like designs are reusable as long as you make sure and pull them off carefully. These are clean and easy to use on any surface. You never have to worry about these stickers leaving permanent marks or residue. Just make sure not to rip the paint each time you remove and relocate it. It’s a great idea for kids’ birthday present or just an activity for them to do pass the time. Kids of all ages, even college students, may like to use these decorate their rooms. Make sure to get bright colors to spruce up any room! They look like puffy stickers, but are not nearly as expensive.

Crazy Chase

School activities really burn me out. That's why I usually doze off on public transportation on my way home. That afternoon the habit took its tool. As soon as I had secured a nice seat by the window, and slide open the windowpane, I fell asleep. When I finally got up only to find that I had way passed my destination, I panicked. "Stop...stop!" I shouted and jumped off the vehicle. On the street, I still couldn't make head nor tail of my where abouts. I decided to cross the street. As I was about to do it, I heard someone shouting angrily behind me. I turned around and saw a man waving at me. I didn't know what I was thinking but I ran off like crazy, crossing the street recklessly to get away from him. But he tailed me. Now I was really terrified. Passersby were beginning to crowd to watch the chase. The man finally stopped and again, shouted at me, "Miss, will you just stop running! I just want to ask for your bus fare. You forgot to pay it."

Bank

A banker or bank is a financial institution that acts as a payment agent for customers, and borrows and lends money. In some countries such as Germany and Japan banks are the primary owners of industrial corporations while in other countries such as the United States banks are prohibited from owning non-financial companies.
Banks act as payment agents by conducting
current accounts for customers, paying cheques drawn by customers on the bank, and collecting cheques deposited to customers' current accounts. Banks also enable customer payments via other payment methods such as telegraphic transfer, EFTPOS, and ATM.
Banks borrow money by accepting funds deposited on current account, accepting term deposits and by issuing debt securities such as
banknotes and bonds. Banks lend money by making advances to customers on current account, by making installment loans, and by investing in marketable debt securities and other forms of lending.
Banks provide almost all payment services, and a bank account is considered indispensable by most businesses, individuals and governments. Non-banks that provide payment services such as remittance companies are not normally considered an adequate substitute for having a bank account.
Banks borrow most funds borrowed from households and non-financial businesses, and lend most funds lent to households and non-financial businesses, but non-bank lenders provide a significant and in many cases adequate substitute for bank loans, and money market funds, cash management trusts and other non-bank financial institutions in many cases provide an adequate substitute to banks for lending savings to.

Supermarkets

Some supermarkets are enormous these days.

Supermarkets come with aisles of different kinds of food and products. For example, you can find fifteen to twenty different kinds of cheese in the dairy section. You can find many different brands of toilet tissue in the paper products section. The frozen food section has everything fro cans of frozen apple juice to bags of mixed vegetables and frozen pizza.

Many supermarkets also have a big health care products aisle. This section is like a small drugstore, with different brands of medicine, shampoos, toothpastes, and other health care items.

Some supermarkets even sell something else, such as magazine, books, shoes, underwear, gardening tools, and other household products. Here you can also use your card in money machines to take money out of your bank.

Shoppers in many supermarkets can buy snacks and cold drinks from vending machines. In some places, tired and hungry shoppers can sit down and enjoy a fresh cup of coffee and a donut at a supermarket snack bar or coffee shop. Supermarkets with their variety of products and services are more popular today.

Banyuwangi

Once upon a time, there reigned in East Java a king named Sidureja. He had a prime minister named Sidapaksa. Sidapaksa had a very beautiful wife.

Sidapaksa loved his wife deeply. They lived in complete happiness. However, Sidapaksa’s mother didn’t like her daughter-in-law. Each day she tried to think a way to separate Sidapaksa from his wife.

One day, King Sidureja asked Sidapaksa to search for the bud of a magic flower on Mount Ijen. It was a long and dangerous journey. The assignment from the king was so important and urgent. Sidapaksa had to leave his pregnant wife.

Not long afterwards, a son was born. The baby’s birth gave much happiness to the young mother.

However, one day, while this young mother was bathing, her evil mother-in-law threw the baby into the river. Knowing that her baby had disappeared, the young mother was very sad. She cold neither eat nor sleep. She became very ill.

Two years passed and Sidapaksa returned from his journey. He succeeded in doing his duty. Just as he was about to enter his house, her mother told him that his wife had thrown their baby into the river.

Sidapaksa believed his mother’s story. He was too angry to use his common sense. He drew his Kris and approached his wife who was lying weak on her bed.

“Ah, wicked woman. Tell me why you threw our new-born child into the river. Tell me!” he said in a rough and angry voice.
“Oh, my dearest husband. I’m innocent. I love you, and our baby. I didn’t kill our child. If you don’t believe me, carry me to the river. I will prove that I didn’t do it,” replied his wife calmly.

Sidapaksa took her wife to the edge of the river. Suddenly, his wife leaped up and threw herself into the river.
“Oh, my God! How will I know who killed my child?” moaned Sidapaksa.

Then he looked down at the water. Suddenly, two pure white flower-buds appeared, one larger and taller than the other. A sweet fragrance came from them.
“Sidapaksa, look here! Beside me is our child. He himself will tell you who drowned him,” the taller one spoke.
“Father, my mother is innocent. Grandmother threw me into the river. Now I’m happy because my beloved mother has come with me,” the smaller one spoke. Then, the two flowers vanished into the water. They left their fragrance behind.

Since then, people call the city on its banks of the river Banyuwangi. Bayu means water and wangi means fragrant.
